# Purging vs. Breaking Out

> How to tell whether a flare-up during the first weeks of Neutralyze use is purging (normal) or a product reaction.

**Purging** is a short-term uptick in breakouts when an exfoliating acne treatment (salicylic acid, mandelic acid, retinoids) accelerates the clearing of already-congested pores. It appears in your usual breakout zones, starts in weeks 1–2, and typically resolves by week 3 with consistent use.

**A product reaction** looks different: irritation, itching, or breakouts in areas you don't normally break out, and it worsens rather than resolves.

## What to do

* Purging: stay consistent — it passes, and it signals the actives are working.
* Suspected reaction: reduce to once daily or every other day; if it persists, discontinue and contact [customerservice@neutralyze.com](mailto:customerservice@neutralyze.com) (60-day money-back guarantee applies).
