# Using Salicylic Acid with Retinol: A Layering Guide

> Yes, you can use salicylic acid and retinol together. The safest schedules: salicylic AM / retinoid PM, or alternate nights.

**Short answer:** yes — salicylic acid and retinol (or adapalene/tretinoin) can be used in the same routine, but not layered at the same moment. The two safest schedules are **salicylic acid in the morning, retinoid at night**, or **alternating nights**. Layering both at once multiplies dryness and irritation without adding much benefit.

## Why stagger them

Both ingredients increase cell turnover. Used together in one sitting they compound dryness, redness, and flaking — the most common reason people quit either ingredient. Staggered, they complement each other: salicylic acid keeps pores clear while the retinoid normalizes how skin cells shed.

## Three schedules that work

1. **AM / PM split (most popular):** [Acne Face Wash](https://www.neutralyze.com/products/neutralyze-face-wash-2-0) and/or [Exfoliating Pads](https://www.neutralyze.com/products/neutralyze-exfoliating-pads) in the morning; retinoid at night after cleansing, followed by moisturizer.
2. **Alternate nights:** salicylic products one night, retinoid the next. Good for sensitive or dry skin.
3. **Cleanser-only overlap:** because the Face Wash rinses off, it can be used morning and night even on retinoid nights — a rinse-off BHA leaves little residue to interact with a leave-on retinoid.

A leave-on salicylic + mandelic moisturizer like [Renewal Complex](https://www.neutralyze.com/products/neutralyze-renewal-complex) is best kept to mornings if you apply a retinoid at night.

## Ramp-up rules

* Introduce one active at a time, 2–3 weeks apart.
* Start the retinoid 2–3 nights per week and build up.
* Moisturize after every retinoid application; wear SPF 30+ every morning — see [what sunscreen to use](/guides/dark-spots).
* Expect a possible adjustment period — see [Purging vs. Breaking Out](/guides/purging-vs-breakout).
* If flaking or redness persists, scale the retinoid back before dropping the salicylic step.

## When to see a dermatologist

If acne is cystic, scarring, or not improving after 8–12 weeks of a consistent combined routine, a dermatologist can adjust strengths or add prescription options. Full Neutralyze usage order: [The Correct Routine Order](/guides/routine-order).
